3D Metrology Services – Automotive – Casting Defect Detection

At EDM Intelligent Solutions, our high-resolution 3D scans of piece parts allow for form measurement down to the µm scale.  A form measurement is made by cutting profiles across the 3D part scan data set and those included points are used to gather various form dimensions including radii, angles, slot width, height step and more. With our 3D Metrology Services, we’re able to offer our customers in-depth, non-contact measurements of almost any shape, size, and form.

Below is an example of a form inspection for detection of flaws in castings/extrusions of an engine casting. The defect detection and 3D measurements of this component were completed using our MVi5 3D Metrology Center.

Delamination

A close-up, side-view microscopic image reveals a cross-section of a material. The top layer appears to be a thin, dark, and somewhat irregular surface, possibly a coating or a damaged area. Beneath this, a thick, porous, and granular layer is visible, characterized by a uniform texture of small, light-colored particles. The bottom layer is a dark, solid line, suggesting a base material or substrate. The overall impression is of a layered composite material with a textured interior.

Lack of Material

A close-up, high-magnification image shows a defect on a metallic surface, highlighted by a red rectangle. The defect appears as a rough, uneven area with some material missing or damaged, disrupting the otherwise smooth, reflective surface of parallel metallic strips.

Porosity 

A close-up, low-angle shot shows a rectangular object with a textured, light purple surface. The object has a dark, possibly metallic, base, and its surface is speckled with small, darker dots. A faint, abstract shape is visible on the left side of the purple surface, appearing as a slightly darker, irregular mark.
