At EDM Intelligent Solutions, our high-resolution 3D scans of piece parts allow for form measurement down to the µm scale. A form measurement is made by cutting profiles across the 3D part scan data set and those included points are used to gather various form dimensions including radii, angles, slot width, height step and more. With our 3D Metrology Services, we’re able to offer our customers in-depth, non-contact measurements of almost any shape, size, and form.
Below is an example of the form scan of micro sized slots that were machined using laser ablation to create an advanced sealing surface used for an industrial application. Combining precision laser ablation services with non-contact, high-resolution 3D scanning allows EDM Intelligent Solutions to create some of the most complex and advanced engineered surfaces that customers in the industrial sealing market can design. Gaining in-depth knowledge and digital characterization of the microstructures that were created by the laser cutting process allow our design engineers to simulate the performance of the sealing surfaces virtually and make improvements to their designs rapidly. Collaborating with our team of expert EDMIS manufacturing and metrology applications engineers during each step of the process results in seeing these improvements materialize quickly, within the next cycle of machined parts.
The form scan and 3D measurements of this component were completed using our MVi5 3D Metrology Center.
