At EDM Intelligent Solutions, our high-resolution 3D scans of piece parts allow for form measurement down to the µm scale. With our 3D Metrology Services we’re able to offer our customers in-depth, non-contact measurements of almost any shape, size, and form. Surface flatness measurement of a component is made simple by analyzing the differences in height throughout the surface being measured.
Below is an example of a surface flatness measurement of a stamped electrical contact. In this application, the flatness of the surface being measured is critical to the performance of the component within its larger electrical assembly. The flatter the surface, the better the electrical contact, helping to reducing the contact resistance and ultimately the heat generated at the point of contact. Improvements in the flatness of an electrical contact also help to transfer current more efficiently from one side of the electrical connection to the other. When used in electrical circuits that support signals, improved contacts help to reduce the overall noise in the circuit, making the signal more stable and reliable.
The form inspection and 3D measurements need to support the surface flatness measurement of this stamped electrical component were completed using our MVi5 3D Metrology Center.
